If you’re interested in buying a wake boat you likely plan to surf with it. However, what many people don’t know is that wake surfing requires a few extra accessories- besides just the boat. Read our short list of helpful items to buy before you go wake surfing.  Then, once you’re set and ready to go, stop by LMC Marine Center in Houston, Texas, and take a look at our many models of wake boats!

Wake Board

Generally speaking there are 3 types of wakeboards to choose from: surf, skim, and hybrid. These terms refer to the types of waves you plan to ride with your board. The size of the board is also an important buying consideration, and can vary notably depending on the rider's height and weight. We advise looking up one of the many charts that calculate a person's size into board length before purchasing one.

Weight Bags

While wake boats create sufficient waves without these items, those wanting to reach more impressive heights often need weight bags on their ships. There are two types of weight bags for wake boats, fat sacs and ballast bags. Fat sacs use a pump to fill or empty themselves with water. Ballast bags come pre-filled with metal weights that cannot be removed or changed. Both products have their pros and cons, but perform the same function. To increase your boat's weight so it can turn up even bigger waves!

Tow Lines

In order to be able to surf at all, you’ll need a tow line. A tow line is a long rope with a handle on one end and a large loop on the other. Your wake boat will have a few places to attach this loop, and you’ll want to fix it to the highest point. This will give you better leverage as you surf, allowing you to go higher up into the air.

Safety Flag

Inevitably, you’ll fall off your board at least once or twice. Whether you’re a beginner or an expert, wet areas make for slippery surfaces, causing lots of trips and falls. When someone falls off their board or releases the tow line, you’ll have to steer back to get them. At this point you’ll need to raise your safety flag. This flag warns other boaters that there is a person in the water and they should steer clear of the area until the flag is put away. This helps avoid dangerous accidents and is an important implement for every boater to have.

While all of these tools are needed for wake surfing, the most important accessory you’ll need is the wake boat itself.
