Marine equipment like outboard motors and boat trailers can get expensive. It’s no surprise that boat owners often try to save money by purchasing used marine equipment. However, getting the most out of your used marine equipment purchase is often more difficult than it looks. That’s why LMC Marine Center has created this guide to purchasing used marine equipment.

Used Outboard Motors

The first thing you should do while shopping for a used outboard motor is figure out which outboards are compatible with your boat. Do this by matching the motor’s shaft length to your boat’s transom height. The motor controls will also need to be compatible with your boat. Once you are sure that the used outboard is compatible, you can inspect it for corrosion and damage. Don’t forget to check the propeller, cowl gasket, anodes, oil, and spark plugs. If the engine passes inspection, perform a compression test to make sure that the PSI numbers are consistent across all cylinders. Finally, do a test drive to make sure that you are satisfied with how the motor performs.

Used Boat Trailers

Since boat trailers tend to be durable, many used models can be found still in great condition. However, it’s still important that you make sure that you purchase a model that’s right for you. Start by checking that the boat trailer will fit your boat. Most new trailers have stickers indicating their capacity, but these can fall off or become illegible with time. If push comes to shove, you may have to do your measurements. Once that’s done, inspect the trailer for signs of damage or wear. Pay particular attention to the axles, suspension, frame, fenders, tires, bearings, couplers, and safety chains. While you’re at it, inspect the brakes and electrical system.
