Duck boats are specifically designed to operate in the kinds of waterways where waterfowl tend to live. The extra mobility can seriously help you step up your duck-hunting game! If you’re interested in purchasing a duck boat and want to find a model that’s right for you, read this guide from the experts at LMC Marine Center.

Finding the Right Hull

Choosing the correct hull is important because ducks tend to favor shallow waters where they can easily find fish to eat, and that’s why many duck boats have flat bottoms in order to glide over sandbanks without running aground. Of course, if you plan to hunt ducks in deeper water, you’ll want to go with a V-shaped hull. These boats provide better stability, which is why they’re great for situations where you want to shoot with more accuracy, such as hunting diving ducks. Of course, ducks tend to drift between areas with different water depths, and because of this, some hunters prefer a boat with a semi-V hull. These boats are better at handling deep water than a flat bottom model but are still able to operate in shallow water up to a certain point.

Motor Types

Another important thing to consider is what type of motor you want to use. While no motor will be totally silent, you’ll want to do what you can to keep noise levels down. Mud motors are available in two styles: long-tail and surface-drive. Long-tail motors are great for operating in waterways that have a lot of branches and other debris floating around. For shallow waters that are relatively debris-free, use a surface-drive motor.

You’ll also need to decide whether you want to use a two-stroke engine or a four-stroke engine. Two-stroke engines are light, responsive, and highly portable. Unfortunately, they also tend to be noisier. While four-stroke motors tend to be quieter and more efficient, they also require more maintenance overall.
